With winter fading away and spring just around the corner, you may find yourself struggling to put a spring in your step. Whether it is because of a class, new sibling, or a fight with your best friend, these circumstances do not have to define you. The months of spring are not only for flowers blooming or birds chirping, it also is typically know for a rebirth of all kinds.

Always try and remember you are in control of how you react to each new situation. You can choose to be upset or take action and decide to view it as an opportunity for inner growth. Take the examples above and read on to see how a “lemon” situation can be turned into lemonade and what is more refreshing than that on a spring day!

Struggling In Class: Math not your favorite or chemistry confusing? Don’t be afraid to ask for help, at the school or ask your parents to help you find a tutor locally. You might be surprised that learning all subjects can be fun.

New Sibling: Adding a family member is always an adjustment but view your new role as role model for your new brother or sister. As they grow up, they will look up to you, so don’t you want to set a good example?

Also ask your parents how you can help whether by babysitting or driving to the store to get more diapers. It might even lead to an increase in your allowance!

Fight With A Friend: Use this fight to really ask what is wrong with your friend. Maybe they had a bad day or maybe it is something bigger like a sick grandparent. Whatever the reason, be honest and say you have noticed she is not her usual self. Your friend will appreciate the concern and in the end you both will become closer friends.

Another important aspect of the season, mentioned above, is the re-birth of various things in nature. You can take a cue from Mother Nature and let your inner beauty shine. Some ways of doing this are listed below.

Less Is More: Nature is beautiful to people because it is not made up. Try the same concept by wearing muted color lip gloss or eyeshadow without glitter.

Color Your World: Nature is also beautiful because of its many colors. You can be just as stunning by adding a pop of color to your wardrobe. Whether that is a fun color belt or pair of sneakers, wow everyone around you.

The above are a few ideas to start the season right. Whether you trying a new hobby or helping the new kid in school, you can take a step in the right direction. Spring is times for growth so why not try to grow into the best version of you possible?

The first step to a moxified new look is to take stock of your current beauty arsenal and get rid of old products. Skin, hair and body care formulas can lose their potency after about one year. Organic products may have an even shorter, six-month shelf life. Some products might have printed expiration dates, but most will not. It will be up to you to decide if it’s time to toss. Look for changes in color, consistency and fragrance to determine if a product is outdated.

Cosmetics and makeup brushes can harbor bacteria after continued use. For eyeliners and mascara, anything older than three months needs to go. Eye Shadow, powders, blush, concealer and foundation can last about six months. Look for clear cues that a product should be discarded, such as broken containers, separation, thickening, or discoloration. Makeup brushes should be discarded if bristles are frayed or if makeup residue cannot be removed by washing with soap and water or a brush sanitizer.

If you’ve picked up an abundance of products throughout the year, now is the time to pair down. Having too many products can lead to stimulation overload, making your morning routine anything but simple. Believe it or not, you don’t need five different eye creams. Pick the best one and forego the rest. Simplify your stash to make your new routine a breeze.

Be Beautiful

Now it’s time for a total beauty redesign. From the beauty must-haves that made the cut, decide which ones you will actually use on a daily basis. Your beauty routine should fit your lifestyle. Consider the amount of time you have to get ready in the morning. To simplify your morning routine, keep your faves out where you can see them. Products that are tucked away in bathroom drawers or medicine closets won’t get used.

Now, for the fun part! If you are missing any of the essentials, shop for items that you need, but don’t go makeup-counter-crazy. Avoid purchasing duplicates of what you already have. Set a beauty goal for the New Year. Maybe you want to try going organic this year. Or maybe you’re after a daring new look? A new year of possibilities is ahead of you!

Sure, the runways are always going to be full of bold colors, must-have silhouettes and fun prints, but they have nothing on the treasures that lie within your own closet. Now, before you say we’re crazy, hear us out. We aren’t saying that you can’t add some accessories or extras to the already-chic ensembles you own (in fact, there are a few areas devoted to that), but rather than do an “out with the old, in with the new”, focus on how to rework those pieces you already have to make them totally fashion forward.

Back to the Basics: Some pieces never go out of style. The little black dress, the classic white men’s shirt and denim are a few things every girl should have in her closet. Timeless, these pieces can be reworked with the season’s must have trends and accessories. When neon goes out of style or people are no longer wearing tangerine, you can still rock that LBD with a new “color of the moment” accessory.

Redo Your Denim: If there is one piece every girl owns a lot of, its denim. While certain jean styles may go in and out of fashion, holding on to the classic styles (bootcut, boyfriend, straight leg) will leave your options open. Especially if some of the jeans you own are designer label or expensive. Denim should be an investment and investments should be used wisely. Think outside of the box and make your denim work for you. Those skinny jeans you wore in summer can now function as tights under a NYE dress or when paired with a great set of knee high boots.

More is More: Over-stylizing is a hot trend and will remain a chic accessory look. Use this to your advantage. Instead of investing in an entirely new wardrobe to stay up to the minutes, let the accessories speak for you. That classic white button down will turn heads when paired with a ton of mixed necklaces. You can dress up those old boyfriend jeans and basic blazer with a stunning cocktail ring or eye-grabbing costume jewelry. Fun, bold accessories can be easier on the wallet and are much easier to replace when trends change than an entire closet of hardly worn clothing.

Color Me Smart: Just as the semester change and crushes come and go, so does the must-have color of the moment. While some statement colors last forever (aka timeless red), other colors are in one minute and out the next. For this reason, when you do color, do it in small (less expensive) increments. Bring color to your classic wardrobe staples with handbags, ballet flats, pumps or cardigans. These things call typically be found on the cheap and will keep you on trend without overstepping fashion boundaries or breaking the bank.

We know there is always going to be that “gotta have it” look of the season and we are a-okay with that. Heck, we are anxiously anticipating it. But in the meantime, taking the pieces that work from your closet and pairing them with daring shoes, fun accessories or even a new hairstyle can take last year’s look into the new year and beyond.

Chic girls are trendy. Smartly chic girls are timeless.

Just like in the Summer, when the weather starts to cool it’s time for a new makeup look. These looks will be perfect for any fall activity, from parties to playing outside with friends. Break out the bright colors, it’s time to wake up those gray fall days!

Winter Wonderland

Whether you’re skiing, having snowball fights, or just strolling around, this style will hold up to the bright winter sun and the harsh winds.

Materials:

SPF moisturizer

SPF tinted moisturizer

Waterproof mascara

Tinted lip balm

Steps:

1. After your normal skin-cleansing routine, apply a moisturizer that contains SPF. Most moisturizers only contain SPF 15, but you can apply sunblock instead. If you choose to do this, make sure to find one that’s oil free so it won’t cause your skin to break out. Using skin products with SPF in it is especially important during the winter because while the skies may be gray and cloudy, the sun can still be harsh.

2. Apply a tinted moisturizer that also has SPF in it. Winter is the time to make sure your skin is hydrated, as well as protected from the sun and wind.

3. Use a waterproof mascara to ensure that your mascara won’t run or flake off in the windy, wet weather.

4. Finish off with a healthy coat of tinted lip balm. Burt’s Bees just came out with a line of great tinted lip balms with colors ranging from nude to dark red. They not only keep your lips hydrated and healthy, but also bright and colorful.

Cool Cheer

Attending a party as the weather cools? No matter how many you plan to attend, this look can be easily changed up and will last the whole night long.

Materials:

Foundation

Powder

Powder blush

Eyeshadow base

Shimmery beige eyeshadow

Glittery white eyeshadow

Brown eye liner

Mascara

Pink or red lipgloss

Steps:

1. Start with a foundation in the shade that matches your skin tone. Foundations like L’Oreal TruMatch have a great system for matching your skin to the right foundation by taking into consideration your hair color, eye color and what colors look best on your skin. Use a makeup sponge to dot the foundation all over your face and blend well, especially around the nose and jawline.

2. Using a big, fluffy brush, sweep on powder in a similar color as your foundation. Make big circles all over your face to distribute the powder evenly, paying attention to the nose and forehead where most oil gathers.

3. Cream blushes last on your skin longer than powder, so buy a shade that compliments your skin tone. Maybelline has a great one called “Dream Mousse Blush” that’s an airy texture that still sticks to your skin.

4. Take an eyeshadow base and sweep it over your whole lid. Let it dry for a minute before putting eyeshadow on. This will make sure that your eyeshadow won’t slip off. If you go to drugstores, Salley Hansen’s “Carmindy” line of makeup products has a great eyeshadow base. Or if you want to save some money and time, just apply foundation and powder to your eyelids as well, which also works as a good base.

5. Choose a sparkly beige or champagne colored eyeshadow and sweep it over your whole eye lid. Follow this with a glimmering white eyeshadow, but use this only over your brow bone and in the inside corner of your eyes. This is a neat trick to make your eyes look big and awake, and can be used for any makeup look.

6. Choose a soft brown eyeliner pencil and line your eyes with it. If you want more drama, draw a line along your lash line as well as the water line underneath your eye. To make your eyes appear bigger, only line the top of your eye.

7. Finish off your eyes with a coat or two of black mascara. My current favorite is Almay’s “Get up and Grow” which coats my lashes nicely, but also makes them look thicker and longer.

8. Complete your look with a coat of bright pink or red tinted lipgloss that will work well with your subtle eye makeup.

Ringing in the Holiday Season

It may be a few months away but as the weather cools, the Holiday season starts to move in. Here’s a look that will work for all your upcoming Holiday events.

Materials:

Foundation

Powder

Cream blush

Eyeshadow base

Eyeshadow in jewel tones of deep green, purple or blue

Black eyeliner

Eyelash curler

Mascara

Pale pink lipstick or clear lipgloss

1. Apply foundation, powder, blush and eyeshadow base in the same way as the look above.

2. Pick a jewel tone eyeshadow shade that works best for you. Green brings out brown eyes, purple brings out green eyes and blue brings out brown eyes. Gently sweep the color over the top half of your lid, underneath your brown bone until the crease of your eyelid. Only go over this area once since the color is really deep and bright. On the lower half of your eyelid, sweep the color two or even three times to make the color richer.

3. Take a black pencil eyeliner and draw a line across your lash line. Rim your water line as well to make your eyes stand out more.

4. Use an eyelash curler to curl your lashes before applying mascara. Squeeze once at the base of your lashes and once at the end to get a nice, even curl. Apply two coats of black mascara.

5. Apply a pale pink lipstick to your lips, or a sheer lipgloss depending on how dark your eye makeup is. The golden rule of applying makeup is play up only one feature at a time! You can also apply clear gloss on top of pink lipstick to add a bit of shine to your lips.

This fall fashion is influenced by not one, but many decades of the past. Glamour of the ‘20s shares clothing racks and runways with the menswear-inspired clothing of the ’40s and wide leg trousers of the ‘70s, and girls everywhere can take garments from each and turn them into something all their own.

Channel your inner-Broadway star with sequins and glam. Or play up your free spirit with Joni Mitchell inspired wide leg pants and loose blouses. No matter what decade speaks to you, or what genre of music appeals to you, there is no right or wrong way to wear this season’s trends. Let’s take a look at the decades making waves this season and the women singers who wore them best.

1920s: Nothing says glamour like the sequins, glitter and decadence of the 1920s. This season every article of clothing is influenced by the shimmering styles of that roaring era. The drop waists, booties, sequined-adorned hats, shift dresses, pleated skirts and fun moving frocks worn by the female blues singers and fun loving flappers of the ‘20s are your for the wearing. To turn this look into a school-worthy ensemble, reach for a shimmery beret instead of your classic fall hat or slip on a pair of Oxfords instead of your boots.

1940s: Menswear has made one of the biggest comebacks in fall fashion this year. Tweed trousers, blazers, and vintage inspired Oxfords, whether high heeled or not, are splashing onto the scene. But this trend isn’t the only thing the 1940s has given us. You will also be tapping into the fabulous ‘40s with pleated pieces (skirts of pants), floral or bird printed frocks and saddle shoes. Keep in mind you don’t have to wear all of these at the same time to tap into the fashion power that was Ella Fitzgerald’s or Katherine Hepburn’s. In fact, its better if you don’t. The message of ‘40s fashion is understated chic.

1950s: This decade gave girls one of the most influential style icons ever: Audrey Hepburn. The way she could sing and dance in cigarette pants, pencil skirts and party dresses is a thing to be admired. And this season it’s something you can emulate. The ‘50s were all about ladylike fashion. Blouses were a staple, curves were accentuated (ala Marilyn Monroe) and Mary Jane heels made their mark. This season you can tap into the feminine fashion of the ‘50s by pairing a fitted skirt with fun tights and a new pair of Mary Janes. Or really turn it up a notch pair crisp collared shirts with tweed blazers or cigarette pants that stop just above the ankles. These ladylike styles will have you dancing through the halls like a modern day Doris Day.

1960s: Nothing turned fashion on its head like 1960s. Loud prints, jeweled necklines, high heeled boots and shorter hemlines changed the landscape of ladies fashion. We can thank the British invasion and Twiggy for setting the trend when it came to loud prints and mod-inspired clothes. But it was the women in music that took the A-line dress to new heights. If you want to channel your inner Michelle Williams (Mamas and the Papas), Diana Ross or early Tina Turner, this is your chance. Get your hands on knee-high boots and a playful A-line shift dress and snatch up any accessory featuring hounds tooth . Keep in mind, that not everything in the ‘60s was light and feminine. Plenty of women also rocked short dresses and ‘60s style in solid colors such as Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane). Just decide which ’60 power female you want to emulate.

1970s: Female folk singers like Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon changed the sound of music. Their clothes changed the way women wanted to dress. Gone were the days of A-line dresses and in walked powerful women wearing wide leg jeans and layers. Short skirts were a thing of the ‘60s. The 1970s were all about longer skirts and a nod to menswear through hats and tweed blazers. This fall you can harness the fashion power of the ‘70s through wide leg jeans and trousers, high heeled loafers, layers of color and floppy hats in camel, black or a rich burgundy. Today this look is best represented on celebs like Nicole Richie and Rachel Zoe, who always rock this look just right.

1990s: Though it wasn’t that long ago, the ‘90s has already begun to repeat itself and was seen just a tad on the runways for fall. Grunge-inspired fashion ala Garbage and Nirvana can be done today without going to the extreme. Pair boyfriend jeans with a flannel, but with a belt. Pair the flannel with shorts, tights and some booties to really make an impression. Remember to make your look a little more Liz Phair than Courtney Love.

The beautiful thing about all of these fall trends is that they can be worn together-at any time. Pair those Oxfords with your boyfriend jeans or wear that ’20 inspired sequins with your ‘70s inspired wide leg jeans. The women who put these trends on the map did so because they rocked. So do you. Get dressed and go inspire!

Music doesn’t come from a sound studio, as much as the fat cat record execs would have us all believe. No, it comes from the heart-and the loving, hard work that people pour in to the sound that they create.
There is a way for dedicated listeners to become involved in new projects, new songs…and work hand-in-hand with the musicians that are making the melodies of tomorrow.
Become involved in the process. You don’t have to travel to Hollywood to find an artist.
Here are some ways you can have a part with the sounds in your own community:
-Donate.
Get a hold of your local school and see if there is a way for you to be able to fund their musical arts program.
If there is, hold a bake sale, rock a lemonade stand, or sell off last season’s kicks in order to invest money in a child’s musical education.

-Become Involved.
There is music in every town. Find where the local groove is in your city. See if you can become part of a street team that hands out flyers or tweets for a local band in your community. Volunteering can take as little or as much effort as you want to put in. Being part of a grass-roots movement to get the word out about your town’s talent is a great way to get people to open up to new sounds.

-Use Technology.
If Blogging, tweeting, and Facebooking is where you shine, get those thumbs moving for the music that inspires you. If you love a band or artist, shout it out! Start a WordPress blog dedicated to your musical interests, follow your Muse online, or get your friends to open their hearts to a new genre of sound that you have discovered. Music is the universal language, after all.

-Petition.
Vote for the county measures that support arts in school, use your legal voice to vote on propositions that endorse free speech movements. There are broad ways that you can throw your support behind the music that moves you, and making sure that music remains open to all forms of expression, can be played on the radio, and continues to be an unhindered source of joy for future listeners can be done with a single vote.

You don’t have to be a professional singer or artist in order to influence the music industry. You have a voice. Let it be heard in your town.

Music has been around for centuries starting with the Stone Age and their chants. However over the decades some artists have changed the direction of music from inspirational to derogatory through its negative imagery and language. Music used to be a means of celebrating, not a vehicle for demeaning women or praising violent acts.

According to an article from the May 2003 publication of New Scientist, where they published the results of a study conducted at Iowa State University, the analysts “believed listening to violent lyrics could have a long-term effect – contributing to the development of a more aggressive and confrontational personality.”

The team lead, Craig Anderson was quoted as saying, “The message is important for all consumers, but especially for parents of children and adolescents.” “The study concluded with the finding “listening to angry, violent music does not appear to provide the kind of cathartic release that the general public and some professional and pop psychologists believe.”

This observation is not surprising considering the plethora of hip-hop artists producing hit songs one day and getting arrested the next. This is not to stereotype rap artists or metal bands but there are many other options of music to listen to other than aspiring to be like Chris Brown or screaming your head off with the newest Metallica song.

Music in its simplest form should transform your bad day and take you to a more relaxing state of mind. This article is not meant to say you cannot listen to your favorite pop station but just wants to point out negative connotations in music can have negative side effects on your personality down the road.

Below are some listening alternatives to the otherwise flood of images about harming women and selling drugs found in the majority of today’s popular songs. Read over the list below provided by the website www.helpmyselfesteem.com, sample the songs, and you might even surprise yourself and enjoy them.

I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack

According To You by Orianthi

Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson

Just Fine by Mary J. Blige

If you don’t like these songs, maybe think of a song as a child you loved or a song that reminds you of your favorite summer trip. Remembering happy moments in your life will make you feel happier in the moment. So sit back, listen, and enjoy the tune of a brand new you!
